Martin Luther King Jr. Day
By: Sam H., Lilly K., Kaitlynn T., Rebecca B.
On January 21st, we didn’t have school at Yutan Elementary because it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He was a memorable person to all Americans for his work in the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King helped African Americans gain civil rights and be treated equally. He is mostly famous for his powerful speeches, especially his “I Have a Dream” speech. Yutan students did many things the week prior to his holiday. The Kindergarteners drew pictures of him and read about his accomplishments. In library, the 6th graders watched a movie on racial segregation.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was very influential in making blacks equal. His main goal was to fight for equality for man. The most famous part of his speech was:
“And when this happens, and when we allow freedom to ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
Mr. Stanton, our principal, said, “We also want to give people the opportunity to celebrate Dr. King’s birthday as they wish. That is why we do not have school on that date.”
Martin Luther King Jr. was a fantastic leader who we should celebrate more than once a year!
Sledding at Recess
Written By: Danny G., and Anna L.
The students at Yutan Elementary this winter have been enjoying the snow using a unique sled. Students have been using rubber baseb all bases to travel down the hill nearest the daycare. Many children at recess choose that as their recess activity.
Mrs.Wigg, a paraprofessional, said, “I think the students are having a lot of fun, but they must continue to follow the rules to be safe.”
Mickenzie G., a sixth grade student, replied, “It’s tons of fun speeding down the hill, especially when it’s a little icy.
Most students welcome the new snow that continues to fall on Nebraska this winter. Why you might ask? It means more fun at recess! We will see you at recess and bring your rubber mat.
